Obelisk of the Martyrs

Its historical origins

The historical origins of the Church of Saint Eugenie in Port Said go back to March 27, 1867 AD, after the management of the Suez Canal Company ceded to the Franciscan fathers a plot of land to build a church for Catholics in Port Said. The church was built of wood in the name of Saint Eugenie.

On March 19, 1890 AD, the current church was rebuilt from stone, and the Italian engineer Eduard Sebek developed the church designs and supervised the implementation.

Its architectural design

The Church of “Saint Eugenie” was built in the European style, which combines elements of the neoclassical style and the modern Renaissance style. It was also designed in the basilica style, the oldest architectural style in church planning and is believed to be an architectural style adapted from the “Roman basilica”, Roman temples.

Its facades are large and high, and are built of stone and brick, while the floors of its three corridors are made of marble.

This church is also distinguished by its decorative elements that are greatly influenced by the neoclassical and neo-Renaissance styles. The church tower consists of a square base with a height of 11 meters, starting from the surface of the ground to the end of the roof of the church. It has a second floor containing a rectangular balcony, in addition to a third floor topped with a conical top that ends with a Latin cross. .

As for the Church of Bishop Bishoy, it is located opposite the Church of Saint-Eugenie, and it is considered one of the heritage and historical buildings in Port Said, as well as a tourist one, as it was an old building belonging to the Vatican, built in 1890 AD, and bearing the name “Asile Couvreux.” It has been rented to the Coptic Orthodox Church, and the conditions are being legalized by issuing an official public license.

The church is built in the shape of Noah’s ark. The church contains an icon of the Virgin Mary who exudes oil in February of every year, starting in 1990 AD, and visitors come to it from various governorates of Egypt and countries.

Stalingrad Square

Its location

“Stalingrad” Square is located in the middle of the Al-Manakh district, the oldest neighborhood in Port Said Governorate, and is considered one of its vital squares.

The square was established in 1975, after the Russian city of Stalingrad established a square named Port Said in recognition of Port Said’s victory over the tripartite aggression. Although the name of the Russian city of Stalingrad changed after the collapse of the Soviet Union to the name of the city of Leningrad and then Volgagrad, the name of the square in Port Said remained the same.

Opening after development
